The Chiwanja Cha Ayao cultural grouping has organized a mega annual festival that will take place on September 10.

In an interview, Chiwanja Cha Ayao publicity secretary MacDonald Sembereka said this year, the event will take place at M’manga Primary School in Balaka District.

“We are currently looking for financial and material support for this year’s event so that we can successfully host the festival,” he said.

Sembereka said the festival requires K50 million which needs well-wishers’ support.

“His highness Paramount Chief Kawinga, the Yao Chief’s Council and the national executive committee hope Malawians will support this event as it is important for the development and sustainability of culture in Malawi,” he added.

In reaction to the announcement, Malawians of Yao heritage welcomed the festival.

Alfred Ngulinga, 24, said he hopes the event will teach Malawians about Yao traditions.

“There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the Yao culture. Many people confuse it with Islam, for example. It is during such events that we must teach Malawians and the world about the Yao culture,” he said.

Meanwhile, other cultural heritage groups such as Maseko Ngonis from Ntcheu, Jere Ngonis from Mzimba and Mulhakho wa Alhomwe have also announced their cultural festival dates this summer.
